Bulgaria, Places of interest: Boyana. Placed near Sofia. The church dates from the thirteenth century. Its mural paintings, dating from 1259, rank among the finest creations of the thirteenth century. Apart from scenes illustrating the Life of Christ (including Christ among the Doctors) and the Feasts, the decoration to the church consists of 18th scenes from the life of St Nicholas, a large number of figures (including the St Theodore of Tiron) and portraits of the founders. Bulgaria, Bachkovo (Bačkovo or Petritzos monastery). The Petritzos monastery at Bačkovo, near Philippopolis (Plovdiv), was founded in 1083 by a Georgian nobleman, Gregory Pakourianos, general of the Byzantine army under Alexius Comnenus, who was killed fighting the Petchenegs in 1086.
